On Sunday, September 7, 2014 the City of Salem will hold its second annual open streets event! Salem Sunday Streets will open up an approximately one and a half mile traffic-free route in the heart of the city for the public to play and explore. Salem Sunday Streets is a free community event, open to everyone from 12:00 pm until 4:00 pm. The event, organized by the City of Salem's Community Development, Urban Development, and Public Works, community partners, and volunteers, is expecting over 2,000 participants. This year's event will kick-off at noon by the Capitol Steps with a Running of the Bulls starring the Cherry City Derby Girls. There will be a primary activity hub at the Capitol Steps which will feature a pedal-powered music stage and a food cart pod. Other fun, family-oriented activities will be located along the route, like yoga, bike safety skills and repair works hops, art, music, and a TEDxSalem promo talk. There will also be a farmers market in Willson Park. The Hallie Ford Museum will be offering free admission during Sunday Streets. Bike caravans are scheduled to depart from four locations for those who want to bike to the event with others on designated safe routes. Salem Sunday Streets will be an opportunity to safely discover active transportation, engage in physical activity, and build community. The route extends along Court Street from Waverly Street to High Street, down High Street to State Street, and along State Street back to Waverly Street. Street closures include: • State Street between High Street and 12th Street • Court Street NE between High Street NE and 12th Street NE • Cottage Street NE between State Street and Court Street NE • Waverly Street NE between State Street and Court Street NE • Church Street between State Street and Court Street NE • Winter Street between Court Street NE and Chemeketa Street NE • High Street between Court Street NE and State Street These closures and access restrictions will be in place from approximately 11 am until 4:30 pm.
