One of the primary objectives of The Salem Convention Center from the very beginning is to do whatever we can to eliminate waste and preserve the environment. To do this, we set out to reduce waste by implementing extensive recycling initiatives throughout the Conference Center, The Grand Hotel Salem and Bentley's Grill. In every area of the hotel, conference center and restaurant we have placed appropriate containers for recycling. But this alone was not enough. What makes our recycling program so successful is our committment to educating and training all Salem Block employees on the current standings of what is and what is not recyclable. Education is huge, and as a company, we pride ourselves on being a leader in the community with our sustainable efforts. Here is how we did it: Utilizing the resources and information from Marion Co. Public Works; Monthly 'Green Team' meetings and education; Distributing Marion County EarthWISE newsletters ; Encouraging employees to always ask questions about recycling materials. There is nothing we throw away that we haven't asked about first! The result? All plastic items, plastic wrap/bags, paper, newspapers, cardboard, Styrofoam, tin, metal, light bulbs, batteries, ink cartridges, milk lids, plastic ware, straws, stir sticks, key cards, old CD's, key cards, etc.. Etc… are all recycled properly. Twice a month trips are taken to the Marion Co. Transfer station on Gaffin Rd. and things are recycled in their proper place. Other things are taken directly to Agri-Plas in the Brooks area. All Styrofoam is taken directly to the Market House on Center St. in Salem. Many of our lost and found items (after the proper dispose of time) are all donated to local shelters and missions. We are dedicated to remove a minimum of 40% of all building occupant waste materials. The Salem Convention Center was the chosen entity for Allied Waste's Composting pilot program (see video below). With the success and education of this program, both the hotel and restaurant are on board and the entire block now composts. Composting containers are placed throughout the back office area, staff restrooms, the staffs break rooms and both kitchens. All food, paper napkins, towels and compostable safe materials are disposed of properly each day. We remain committed to exploring new opportunities to better conserve and reuse our valuable resources. Read more about the Salem Convention Center's commitment to sustainability.
